i'm pat lawson muse. >> and i'm jim handly. first up at 4:00, we're keeping a close eye on hurricane sandy today. the current track is increasing the chances that we could see some of the effects. >> sandy is passing over the bahamas, and it hit cuba as a category 2 storm. two people have died. and some cuban villages are still cut off from rescuers. president obama is getting regular briefings about hurricane sandy. the white house is urging everyone to monitor weather reports and be prepared in the days ahead. let's head straight to meteorologist veronica johnson. what do we need to know, v.j.? >> thanks, jim and pat. sandy is a hurricane 2. again, its winds right now at 105 miles per hour. very, very strong hurricane. we're going to see the storm system weaken a little bit. today the eye not quite as apparent. but it is expected to then strengthen again after a little weakening takes place.

here's a look at the track of hurricane sandy. it will make its way on up toward the north, getting very close to the east coast and now for areas from the mid-atlantic through new england, that's where the track is even more to the west, as we head into tomorrow. impact on mid-atlantic to new england sunday through monday, possibly even tuesday. here's what we know now. sandy moving more inland. a higher probability with it likely to see some power outages and flooding. right now a moderate to high threat for areas of the mid-atlantic on up through new england. the thinking here is that this will be a destructive storm for some, with a lot of wind and a lot of rain. it will be in areas in the mid-atlantic and new england. temperatures on the mild side for today. that's exactly what it will be by tomorrow morning. 60 to 59 degrees.

we'll talk about what to expect through the rest of this week and more on hurricane sandy coming up. the danger with any big storm is falling trees and high winds can cut off power. utility companies are already making moves to keep the electricity on. pepco already has crews checking out problem spots today. 400 contractors are now on standby. residents are also hitting the stores to make sure they are ready. >> i have like kerosene lamps, and extra storage stuff. flashlights, yeah, and then i have food that will last about a year. >> she's definitely prepared. if power outages are serious, crews from other areas will again be called in to help make repairs. >> we're watching sandy's track today. so it's important to check with us in the coming days. keep up with us on facebook and twitter, too, as well as nbcwashington.com. veronica will show you how to stay up to date with the storm

team 4 weather app. a murder in the middle of the afternoon. right now, police are asking for help finding the car seen driving away from a killing in northeast washington here, just before 1:00. officers say someone shot a man near the corner of 36th street and benning road. a black toyota camry with tinted windows and pennsylvania plates. police believe there were two people inside the car. police have in their custody right now a well-known swim coach. his name is rick curl. he turned himself in to police in montgomery county in connection with a 30-year-old allegation of child abuse. keith russell is live in our newsroom with word on hour curl's accuser is reacting. >> reporter: rick curl has already been banned for life by usa swimming. had his name taken off the swim club he founded. now the legendary montgomery county coach stands to lose

something else, his freedom. this is video of curl speeding away post 50g$,000 bond on the same day he turned himself in. arrested on one count of child abuse. it goes back to allegations that he sexually abused one of his teenage swimmers almost 30 years. pat collins spoke to kerin. she said he abused her starting when she was 13. >> i don't know whether to laugh or cry. i'm thankful. i'm sad. i just feel confirmation that what i did was the right thing to do. yeah, that's what he deserves. absolutely. for as long as the justice system -- i want the justice system to do its job. >> for more on this developing story, check out nbcwashington.com and pat collins will have more from the alleged victim tonight on news4 at 5:00. keith russell, news4. a man is back on home turf

after a car crash in northwest washington led to more than an hour of negotiations at the russian embassy. police say the man crashed at massachusetts and calvert, then ran down the street and hopped a fence at the embassy this morning. secret service talked to russian security forces to convince them to turn the suspect over to u.s. authorities. he's now charged with drunk driving. coming up at 5:00, jackie bensen tells us more about the man who made it into one of the most secure compounds in washington. in the race for the white house today, the frenzied pace of the final days of this campaign. mitt romney campaigned across his must-win state of ohio. and president obama is barn storming the swing states today. steve handelsman is following both sides on this busy day and joins us from capitol hill with the latest. >> reporter: jim, thanks. it's tough and exhausting, and it's continuing at this hour. mitt romney soldiering through, buoyed up by his rise in the polls. barack obama is making his

newlyweds taking heat for a gag video played at their wedding. >> a mogul crash in beverly hills. joining us now, georgia. so, georgia, sean diddy combs apparently doing okay after this crash yesterday. >> the thing is, it happened right in front of the beverly hills hotel. so there were tons of cameras there, always camped outside the hotel. he actually wasn't driving. he was a passenger in the car. nobody went to the hospital. there are pictures of diddy lying in the seat. they kept it moving. >> that looked like it was worse than it apparently was. there's a lot of talk, of course, about the justin timberlake/jessica beal wedding. we've got video. and this video is getting a lot of hits online. >> it is. this video is crazy. what happened is, i don't know

why they were taking heat, because they didn't set up the video. one of their friends set up the video. basically the video says, you know, hey, from your hollywood friends who couldn't make it, greetings. and then it goes on to show homeless people saying, we wish you well, we wish you good luck. a lot of people thinking that was insensitive. the guy who put it on said this was personal. it wasn't for the whole world to see. the guy is suing now gawker.com, or threatening to sue if they don't take the video down. but the video, people are thinking it's insensitive not only because you've got homeless people, you've got this big lavish wedding that cost $6 million, and you're kind of making fun of homeless people. >> not good. >> some of justin's 'n sync band mates left off the list. >> who knew. spent all these times with these kids growing up with them. sources say he can't stand joey

>> that's just amazing to me. >> still raking in the dough. 93.9, we'll be listening to you. >> please do. the latest on sandy now. >> storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson has the latest. >> i'm going to start with the impact, what it will have on our area. right now, the guidance seems to be staying the course. this is going to be a big storm for us for sunday late time period. for monday, through tuesday and possibly even wednesday. how big of an impact? well, a high impact right now. there's at least an 80% chance. we're talking strong winds and heavy rain. only a 20% chance that we're going to see a little bit of wind and some light rain. so right here, this is what we're focusing in on for now. as well as some of the other cities that could have a high impact. we're talking big cities around the mid-atlantic, and areas of new england. philadelphia, new york, this could be a huge storm system.

so right now today, we've seen the clouds fade. look at the clouds down south through the sunshine state. the rain, too, coming in. this is the northwestern part of the band of what's coming right around sandy. heavy rain coming through areas of miami. they're even getting some thunderstorms. big cloud shield, too. and that's what we're going to see with this storm system, as we follow the track, it will follow north-northeast and jogs to the west. when it gets close to us, its wind field will get pretty big, and that's why we've got high winds also in the forecast for the monday time period, the tuesday time period, possibly even wednesday. right now the storm is a category 2. it's winds over 100 miles per hour, moving through the bahamas. by the time we get to friday, it's going to lose some of this intensity, probably a category 1. there's the jog to the east-to-northeast. the jog back to the west, that's high pressure up to the north

that will help to pull sandy back close to the coast and perhaps even inland, which changed from yesterday. this jog inland, or at least closer to the coast now, will occur probably north of our area. so expecting, again, very heavy rain here. but those cities that could get hit the worst, right around the jersey shore, newark, philadelphia, they could be looking at flooding rain. as far as the storm moving up the coast, everywhere in the red, it's a high impact area with rain and wind. it includes areas of northeastern virginia, norfolk, areas through the carolinas, piedmont as well. and probably the worst for us, late sunday night into wee hours of monday morning. probably even through early tuesday morning. that's the time period when we're probably going to get hit the worst. strong winds, coastal flooding, heavy rain. we're also looking at the potential of power outages. we're talking potential here.

threatening the mid-atlantic and the northeast. the storm passed over the bahamas and cuba today with winds of more than 100 miles per hour. two people have died. here at home, power crews are getting ready, just in case sandy knocks out the electricity. we've been keeping a close eye on sandy today. and its potential impact on us. >> let's get the latest from veronica johnson. >> yeah, the first time we probably see some of the impact from sandy will be sometime on sunday. so we've got a couple of quiet days, a couple of dry days. and things will really be ramping up then as we get into sunday night and monday morning. a couple of dry days, as i said. we got rid of the clouds, got rid of the fog, but we'll do it all over again tomorrow morning with more clouds early on, and more fog. look at that camera high atop the gaylord resort. our temperatures not too bad from green belt, mount ranier, olney currently at 69 degrees.

reston and great falls, 68 degrees your temperature. gand afternoon to you. here's a look at what you can expect overnight, tomorrow morning, dropping to the low to mid-60les. fog early on. we'll talk more about sandy, its track and impact in a couple of mists. again, we have to stress the importance of staying with news4 as we track hurricane sandy. it could be a dangerous storm. stay tuned to news4 and nbc washington.com. and keep up with us on facebook and twitter. and liz crenshaw will explain how to avoid some of the flooding that storms often bring. lee boyd malvo is speaking out ten years after the arrest of the sniper shootings that terrorized our region and left ten people dead. he's serving a life sentence and says he's forgiven himself. in a phone interview with nbc's matt lauer, he asked the families of victims not to give him power by allowing the attacks to continue to haunt them.

malvo also revealed he had been sexually abused at a young age, and the entire time he spent with john allen mohammed. he said mohammed manipulated him to the point he couldn't stop the crimes. >> i couldn't say no. i had wanted that level of love and acceptance and consistency for all of my life. and couldn't find it. and even if unconsciously, or even in moments of short reflection, i knew that it was wrong, i did not have the will power to say no. >> malvo says there are other victims who are unaware. he said two years ago he contacted victims in five states but he said it got to the point he couldn't psychologically handle it. wendy rieger will have more on what might be malvo's last interview, right here on news4 at 5:00 tonight. there are new worries today

about the caffeine in energy drinks. these drinks are very popular because they provide the extra jolt that mean people want, especially when they're trying to stay awake. however, one maryland mother blames energy drinks for the death of her teenage daughter. as tom costello reports, others are also concerned and want tighter regulations. >> reporter: the headlines this week have been full of warnings about the caffeine levels in those high-energy drinks. popular with high school and college kids. now "consumer reports" is out this morning with its own investigation. into the real caffeine levels in the drinks, and those drinks that don't specify caffeine levels. "consumer reports" tested 27 products and found that five of the cans that list caffeine actually had levels at least 20% higher than their labels indicated. and 11 of the products don't specify their caffeine levels at all. since they're considered a

dietary supplement, they're not required to. >> it's important for people to understand what they're buying and drinking, and if that information is not even available on the product, that's a problem. >> reporter: among those drinks that don't list caffeine levels, monster. we first reported on monster last march and the death of 14 yd aniece foreignier who died of cardiac arrest. cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity. she had consumed two monster drinks in less than 24 hours. her mother is now suing monster. >> she's the last thing i think about at night. i visit the cemetery every day. >> reporter: aniece did suffer from a common heart defect and monster insists its products are safe telling nbc news it does not believe its products are in any way responsible for aniece's death. but the fda this week confirmed

aniece is one of five deaths that could be linked to drinking monster energy drinks. monster points out its biggest drink contains 240 milligrams of caffeine, less than many popular coffee drinks. >> between the caffeine, the sugar, its effects on blood pressure, adverse effects, i think it's difficult to justify a case for children, young adults to be using these substances right now. >> reporter: e.r.s across the country report a dramatic concern in caffeine overdoses in recent years. they want the fda to regulate the caffeine drinks. >> is it too much to ask the dietary supplement companies and at least register their product before they put them on the shelves across america? >> the american beverage association said it's adopted voluntary policies on energy

drink labels and marketing to children. some do offer warnings and some don't. on the heels of apple's big ipad mini revealed, microsoft had its own big debut today. the company launched its new windows 8 operating system. it's meant to bring eye-catching and friendly elements to windows, something that's proved popular on smartphones and tablet computers. windows 8 comes preinstalled on new pcs, it will also work on phones and tablets. microsoft said the current windows 7 users will continue to get tech support until 2020. in the right place at the right time. watch as two heroes save a woman who collapsed in a parking lot. how many glasses of wine it takes to cut your brain cells in half.

we're not liking this latest direction so much. >> right. we're talking about parts of the area that really could -- there's the potential to have a lot of rain, a lot of wind. of course, we were just looking at one of the shots outside. a lot of the leaves still on the trees. so you're talking about a lot of weight there with the water that could be coming through this area. take a look. there you can see it, folks. we'll head on over to the weather wall and i'll give you a little bit more detail with the

future cast, or future weather on when this rain is going to start around here and when i think the winds will really start cranking up. we start with this evening. we've got a few clouds around the area. tomorrow, as we go through the day, it will be another day with an east and northeasterly wind. we'll pick up more clouds. it will be a partly sunny, partly cloudy day. in the low 70s. for saturday, again, clouds here, with showers remaining well to the west. it's sunday when we're really going to see the rain make its way eastward and into our area throughout the day. and i do think that on sunday we could start to see those winds sunday afternoon, sunday evening, crank up with some gusts potentially up to 50 miles per hour. then it's sunday night and monday when we could see this 60-plus-mile-per-hour wind gusts around the area. category 2, winds over 100 miles an hour. we want to give you that track one more time, as it weakens to

the suspect in a deadly shooting inside a georgia mega church yesterday faced similar charges in maryland. police documents show floyd palmer was charged with shooter another man at a baltimore mosque in 2001. the victim survived. palmer pleaded not criminally responsible and was committed to a psychiatric hospital in 2004. court documents show he was released a year later. palmer is accused of opening fire inside the world changer's church international yesterday killing a volunteer, the pastor dollar was not inside the church

at the time. a story that could have played out much differently. a 74-year-old woman suffered a medical emergency and passed out in the parking lot of a gas station in georgia. as devon reports, the quick actions of the people who saved her were caught on camera. >> reporter: it took a few seconds to size up the situation. >> i can see plainly she's cold to the touch. she's pale skinned. blue around her mouth. >> reporter: but fortunately for the 74-year-old woman there was an e.r. doctor and a police officer in the very parking lot where she collapsed. >> assessing the situation there. and this gentleman introduces himself as an e.r. doctor. >> reporter: working in tandem, the pair performs cpr. the doctor pumping on the woman's chest as corporal reynolds gave her mouth to mouth. >> he saw her struggle for air. she starts choking a little bit. and you're like, we've got a chance here, if she can hold on just a little bit longer. >> reporter: paramedics arrived
